Who We Are

Who We Are

Over the years, those who have sought to influence government on a particular issue of public policy have learned that, while the individual forms the basic unit of a representative democracy, groups of individuals acting in unison will have more influence on government than the same number of individuals acting alone.

Most elected officials are aware that an effective, organized group can make them accountable in ways that individuals cannot. This is because organizations do things like hold meetings, talk to reporters, mail out newsletters, raise money, educate the community, develop lists of pro-life citizens (voters), distribute voting records of their elected officials, etc.

Our goal, therefore, is to identify within our community the largest possible number of people who share our view that abortion is wrong and that legal protection must be restored to the unborn child. These individuals, once they have been identified, can then be formed into committees and local pro-life organizations.

If you are considering starting a right-to-life chapter, you should understand the importance of a local chapter. A right-to-life chapter is an indispensable part of restoring legal protection to innocent human life. The chapter is the essence, the very heart of the pro-life movement. Focusing its activities within a local community, the chapter becomes the pro-life voice for the community and plays a major role in helping to achieve the movement’s goals.

Your goal as a pro-life leader will be to develop an effective local pro-life organization within your community. You will be better able to influence the position of your legislators because you have developed an effective local group. But avoid working on the structure to the point where it becomes an end in itself. Organization is the servant and not the master. The organization will start out small, but it will grow as the community sees its effectiveness.

A chapter’s work is limited to a local community, but when it is a part of the statewide and nationwide effort, a similar message is being given throughout the country, and the efforts are greatly multiplied. In order for a chapter to maximize its efforts, it is important to affiliate your chapter with the National Right to Life Committee and its state right-to-life affiliate. The affiliation will help make sure your chapter is the local voice for the overall right-to-life movement. Remember that we can’t protect unborn children in small towns and local communities unless we are protecting unborn children everywhere in the state and the nation.

If you haven’t already done so, contact your state right-to-life organization and let them know you are interested in being a part of a right-to-life chapter. Find out if there is a group already active and organized in your community. There may already be an active National Right to Life chapter in your town about which you are unaware.

The right-to-life movement is a terrific team effort made up of people from every imaginable walk of life at the local, state, and national levels. It will be by working hand in hand with each other that we will ultimately win the battle.

Each of us has something unique to contribute. Working together we can encourage and help each other in our endeavors to reach our final goal—legal protection restored to innocent human life.

If there is not a chapter in your local community, we urge you to consider starting one. You can contribute as much or as little as you are able. Remember every single thing you are able to do helps and makes an important contribution to the total effort. It is not nearly as difficult as you might think. You will be part of one of the greatest grassroots movements in history.
